Notes

Second FIFA World Cup. First to require qualification (32 nations entered for 16 spots). Reigning champions Uruguay declined to defend their title — the only champion ever to do so. Pure single-elimination knockout from the round of 16 — no group stage; the only WC ever in this format. Hosted under Mussolini's regime amid widespread allegations of refereeing bias favouring Italy. Italy fielded several oriundi (South-American-born players) including Luis Monti, who had played in the 1930 final for Argentina — the only player to appear in two World Cup finals for two different countries.
