Notes

First WC with the new FIFA World Cup Trophy (Brazil kept the Jules Rimet permanently in 1970). Unique 1974-1982 format: 4 groups of 4 → top 2 advance to one of two second-round groups (4 teams each) → group winners contest final, runners-up play for 3rd. The Netherlands debuted 'Total Football' under Rinus Michels with Johan Cruyff at the centre. East Germany beat West Germany 1-0 in the only ever Cold War WC meeting (Sparwasser, 22 June). West Germany won the final 2-1 (Breitner pen, Müller). 97 goals, no own goals credited.

  • contextRinus Michels' Netherlands debuted 'Total Football' (Totaalvoetbal) at 1974 — every outfield player able to play any role. Led by Johan Cruyff, the team revolutionised the sport. They reached the final undefeated but lost 2-1 to West Germany.
  • matchesEast Germany 1-0 West Germany on 22 June 1974 (Hamburg) was the only meeting of the two German states at a World Cup. Jürgen Sparwasser's goal stunned the hosts. Both teams advanced; East Germany was eliminated in round 2.
